| Campaigns are expensive. Mailers, signs and ads cost money. I will not be accepting any corporate donations, so I am relying on my supporters to help me get elected.
Thankfully, Benicia has a campaign finance ordinance that limits individual donations and candidates' campaign expenditures. Donation limits per person (not per household) are $620.
(Benicia's campaign finance ordinance does not apply to independent expenditure campaigns [Political Action Committees] which, under the Citizens United decision, can spend without limit. There is already a PAC that spent heavily in the 2018 City Council election, which has now gathered an additional $200,000 to spend on Benicia's 2020 mayor and council elections. There is no way we can compete with this spending, which is why it is so important to generate a significant level of community support. Hopefully that PAC will spend its money on issue-oriented campaigning rather than attack ads and negative campaigning.)
